Hot Site! Pictures of Most Flight Attendant Uniforms

Appearance: AppearanceReg.doc
Appearance guidelines for aviation and travel careers are detailed in a word document that you may download. Certain companies, including Disney and the airlines, have very rigorous appearance regulations, so you will want review them carefully and avoid visible tattoos, unnatural hair color, or piercings. In addition, flight attendant weight must be “in proportion to their height,” which means you must look like you are in good physical shape and not overweight by the national weight guidelines. See actual Uniform Appearance Standards for an airline, and United Airlines Collective Bargaining Agreement on Uniforms.

Dress for Success: Considerable research has been done on appearance. For example, researchers have found that for men, blue suits, with a white shirt and red tie are the most authoritative without being overbearing, which is why you often see presidential candidates wearing this combination. A blue tie would be a bit friendlier for someone trying to be well-liked. Researchers also found that men in black suits were perceived to be too overbearing during the day and men in brown suits were too much like a college professor (knowledgeable but too philosophical:). Of course there are exceptions to this research, especially in places like Hawaii and Southern California, or in unique industries, but always remember to dress like the job you want.

Also, we are beginning to see more professional women wearing pants, but for formal events and interviews, you may not want to risk being perceived as too casual, which is why Cypress female students in Special Projects wear skirts for business events (and it is practice for airline interviews).

POLO Shirts:
Navy blue polo shirts are available for $20 with either the ATC or AVIA logos. Aviation students who plan on participating with the Flying Team should purchase a shirt. All ATC/AVIA students who participate in the Foundation Golf Tournament or in high school visits or Senior Day should also purchase either an ATC or AVIA shirt. Shirts may be ordered through Kathy March (484-7252) or your instructor. (W=xsmall - xlg. M=sm-XXL).

Suits:
If you would like to participate in the professional events on campus or in the community, you will need to enroll in ATC 50 or AVIA 50 and purchase a navy blue suit and white shirt for the course. In the past, Burlington Coat Factory, JC Penny’s, and Nordstroms have been good resources for female students looking to purchase a quality suit for a bargain price. For male students, you may want to try Men’s Warehouse or Burlington Coat Factory. Remember that you may want to use this suit later for job interviews, so you’ll want a flattering, comfortable, and professional looking garment that does not wrinkle easily. Also, you’ll want blue or black shoes that are flattering and not clunky. Women should wear pumps (closed-toe and closed-heel shoes with no straps). Suits are strongly recommended for all airline students. See below for links on where to buy suits.*

“Casual” Business Attire:
Travel Students: If you would like to earn credit by working in the Travel Resource Office, conservative casual attire is acceptable (i.e. no bare mid-sections or spaghetti straps). Students working as interns in local agencies or on campus must adhere to the Business Attire guidelines (link above)

Where to Buy:
*Where and how to buy a suit: Both men and women should try to find a navy blue suit with a white shirt (collared). Penny's, Macy's, Ross, K-Mart, Sears, Nordstroms, and thrift shops. Remember that you may wear this to an interview so it is worth spending a bit more to feel comfortable. You may also try: http://www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/.
