FAA PILOT CERTIFICATES AND RATINGS

FAA pilot certificates are issued for different category of aircraft. Each certificate requires a specified amount of experience (flight hours), knowledge (FAA knowledge exam) and skill (pass a flight test from a designated pilot examiner or FAA flight inspector).

Categories basically are: Airplane, Glider, Rotorcraft, Lighter than Air

In the Airplane category there are four classes: single engine land, multiengine land, single engine sea and multiengine sea.

Glider is a category and class.

In the Rotorcraft category there are two classes: Helicopter and Gyroplane

In the  LTA category there are two classes: Airship and Balloon

A person can obtain a Private pilot certificate or a Commercial pilot certificate in any on the above mentioned classes. One can have a Private certificate on some classes and a Commercial certificate in others.

MOST COMMON: Airplane (single engine land and multiengine land) and Helicopter.

To a Private Pilot Certificate (license) one can add an Instrument Rating. The Private Pilot Certificate with Instrument Rating is required as prerequisites to obtain a Commercial Pilot certificate. The Commercial Pilot certificate requires a minimum of 250 hours of flight experience and the completion of a harder knowledge exam than is required for the Private pilot and of course a more difficult and extensive flight test.

The Air Transport Pilot Certificate is the highest possible pilot certificate issued by the FAA. It requires 1500 hours experience and a Commercial Pilot certificate with Instrument rating. The knowledge exam and flight test is again more difficult.

The Flight Instructor rating may be obtained in any of the above mentioned classes. Commercial pilot certificate and a flight test are required for all Flight Instructor ratings and a knowledge exam is required for most.

Ground Instructor ratings are Basic, Advanced and Instrument. Each has its own knowledge examination.

A one time knowledge examination  on Fundamentals of Instruction is required to obtain any FAA ground or flight instruction rating.

There are other FAA certificates a person may obtain such as: Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, Air Traffic Control, Parachute Rigger, Flight Engineer, etc.

A pilot can also get Type certificated on a specific airplane weighing over 12,500 lbs. This means most business jets and airline aircraft require a type certificate. Examples: B747, DC10, Grumman G-4, Lear 35.
