Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Basic Skills, SLOs, Program Competencies
Overview: Each year managers, recruiters, and trainers from the industry attend the Cypress College Aviation & Travel Careers Advisory Board Meeting to make recommendations about how we can best prepare students for careers in the aviation and travel industries. These industry representatives have identified minimum and preferred requirements for career success. We have categorized these requirements into three main categories:

1.Basic Skills Assessment (BSA): Do not pass go until you have mastered these five absolute minimum requirements!

2.Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Evidence of learning requirements related to the industry’s preferred requirements.

3.Program Competencies: Skills that you will practice throughout your studies that will make you a more competitive applicant and employee.

BASIC SKILLS ASSESSMENT (BSA): The Bare Minimum (no excuses)!
Test yourself. If you aren’t at 90% yet, keep practicing until you achieve at least 90% accuracy. Once you pass the test with a 90%, print a copy for your portfolio. Note: Cypress College also recommends English 60 and Math 15 level minimum competency.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs):
For each course, students will complete a culminating project or capstone assignment called student learning outcomes (SLOs) that will be documented in the student's career portfolio. PROGRAM COMPETENCIES:
In addition to the above basic skills and student learning outcomes, students will learn and practice industry related skills throughout their studies that will help them become competitive applicants and employees. We have provided you with Apps to help you practice some of the competencies on your phone.
FLASHCARDS: Free App “QUIZLET”
Flashcards that you might find useful can be accessed on your phone (free) by downloading Quizlet. Many airlines use this app to train employees as well. Once you download the free APP, put any of the following into the search engine so you can practice:

Geography: Geography Practice (Practice on this easy website until you know the location of all the
continents, oceans, U.S. states, countries in all of the Americas––central, north, and south––

–Determine Your Oral Rate of Speech Test: What is your speech rate or words per minute?__________
Choose a long passage to read and either record yourself or have someone time you for one minute.
Read as if you were talking to a customer. In other words, your speech should be conversational, not too
fast or slow. At the end of one minute, stop reading and count the number of words you read. Try the
exercise three times with three different passages to determine your words per minute. If you're in the
range of 160 to 180 words per minute, you speak at a rate that is comfortable to your customers. Adjust
your rate of speech accordingly, or if your rate is too fast, you might try radio advertising as a career!
